    On 21 May, 2018, the Kvarken Council’s AGM took the historical decision to transform the Council from being a registered association into an EGTC, European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation. The Kvarken Council’s Board serves as the working committee for the EGTC process and the Council’s office has, as commissioned by the Board, started work to transform the legal form of the Council from a registered association into an EGTC. Here is a brief overview of the process.

    The 70th anniversary of the Kvarken traffic and the fifth anniversary of the NLC Ferry shipping company, also known as Wasaline, was celebrated with a seminar onboard M/S Wasa Express on 13 September 2018. The seminar theme was the past, present and future prospects of the Kvarken ferry connection.

    Olav Jern has a long experience of Nordic co-operation and of work with Kvarken issues. In the autumn, he has together with the Kvarken Council’s personnel draft a new three-year strategy for the Kvarken Council. In his welcoming address, Mr Olav Jern touched upon some central guidelines in the strategy plan.

    Starting from August 2018, the Kvarken Council will run a three-year project, together with four project partners and fifteen co-financiers, in order to improve the visibility and attract more visitors to the Kvarken region through cross-border cooperation. The project is called Destination Kvarken and it is financed by Interreg Botnia-Atlantica programme.
