The fourth FAIR competence network webinar on sustainable aviation in Norway<\/p>\n

Sustainable aviation<\/strong><\/p>\n

The goal of the FAIR project is to create synergy, increase knowledge of the potentials of electric-powered flights and accelerate the implementation of regional electric flights especially in the Kvarken region. The project consists of three work packages (WP 1-3) of which RISE is responsible for WP 3 focusing on the Cross-border innovation process and the project\u00b4s competence network.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the competence network is to gather and engage actors for the active exchange of expertise and knowledge.\u00a0The goal is to contribute to and further develop a Nordic competence network within electric aviation.<\/p>\n

The projects\u2019 fourth competence network webinar on April 21st<\/sup>, gathered about 50 participants.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ing. Sigurd \u00d8vreb\u00f8<\/strong>, \u00a0Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Electrical Norway presented on Sustainable aviation \u2013 from fuel to thrust. Rolls-Royce is committed to playing a leading role in enabling the vital sectors in which they operate to get to zero emissions by 2050. Rolls Royce works with electric and hybrid-electric applications in different business sectors and Dr. Ing. \u00d8vreb\u00f8 pointed out key areas of focus in civil aerospace: continuing to improve the gas turbine, collaborate on drop-in SAFs and develop radical alternatives such as electrification and hydrogen. Dr. Ing. \u00d8vreb\u00f8 stated that sustainable aviation requires innovations from fuel to thrust- involving fuels and energy, airport power, new engines, electric power, and propulsion systems with markets like small propeller aircrafts, eVTOL and commuter aircrafts.<\/p>\n

Olav Mosvold Larsen<\/strong>, Head of Avinor\u2019s carbon reduction program presented on Norwegian aviation being fossil-free by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement. Avinor with 44 airports is dedicated to being fossil free by 2030 and Mr. Larsen pointed out that the aviation industry needs multiple emission reductions by more energy efficient aircrafts, sustainable fuels, and new technologies. He also indicated possible interesting Norwegian route areas on up to 350km distances for electric or hybrid electric aircrafts, the worldwide upcoming efforts in the hydrogen domain and the impact of new energy carriers on the aviation eco system.<\/p>\n

Discussion points during the webinar touched upon a wide range of topics from fuel, operational and capital costs to infrastructures, possible markets, customer base, and state support legislation. The dialogue explored future scenarios within the scope of identifying opportunities to positively disturb the existing Nordic Air system, implementing Electric Aviation in a way to capitalise on regional strengths and opportunities.<\/p>\n
