The planes will\u00a0have seats for 19 passengers and a range of 400 km\u00a0or more. These will be relatively small planes that fly short distances \u2013 something the aviation industry has turned away from in the past few decades.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For many decades, the aviation industry has instead been characterised by large-scale aviation.\u00a0Profitable routes have been between large cities with as large planes as possible.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Kvarken hopes to become a<\/span>\u00a0forerunner<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2013 Electric planes turn the\u00a0traditional way of thinking upside down, as lesser\u00a0trafficked\u00a0flight routes might become interesting to operate due to lower costs. This is thanks to the fact that electric planes most likely will have lower\u00a0operation and maintenance\u00a0costs than traditional planes, explains\u00a0<\/span>Mr\u00a0Mathias Lindstr\u00f6m<\/span><\/b>, Director of the Kvarken Council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In the end,\u00a0everything\u00a0is controlled by\u00a0demand, but there are clear incentives for\u00a0new patterns\u00a0in air traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few years ago<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the Kvarken Council\u00a0started a project to gather knowledge on electric aviation. The idea is to prepare the region to make use of this\u00a0new technology in the future, while also benefitting from being a forerunner in the field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/span>Our region is unusually well-suited for electric aviation. It is not unrealistic\u00a0to think\u00a0that the Vaasa-Ume\u00e5\u00a0route will be flown by electric planes in the future, Lindstr\u00f6m notes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

Cheaper engines and maintenance<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The reason why there is not a flight between Vaasa and\u00a0Ume\u00e5\u00a0today is first and foremost the fact that\u00a0the route\u00a0is not profitable\u00a0to fly\u00a0with larger traditional planes. What is it then that makes\u00a0electric planes\u00a0more affordable?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Firstly, electric engines are cheaper\u00a0to manufacture than traditional airplane engines. Secondly,\u00a0electric engines\u00a0are much simpler constructions, which means that they do not need as much maintenance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In the long term, electric aviation will revolutionise the aviation market. Lower costs might make it more profitable to fly shorter distances with smaller planes, which would make\u00a0an\u00a0airplane seem more like a bus. New profitable routes between smaller towns might arise, instead of all air traffic\u00a0passing through capitals. This, in turn, might also give regional air traffic an upswing, says Project Manager\u00a0<\/span>Mr\u00a0Andreas\u00a0Forsgren<\/span><\/b>, who also has been part of the project.<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

Electric flights over Kvarken<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Electric aviation has the greatest chances\u00a0to succeed\u00a0in areas, where there are few alternative modes of transport.\u00a0This means, for instance,\u00a0places without railway or a road network.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In places with geographical obstacles, such as mountains or sea, electric aviation seems to be able to become a competitive alternative to trains and cars, explains\u00a0<\/span>Mr\u00a0Arne\u00a0Smedberg<\/span><\/b>, CEO at\u00a0BioFuel\u00a0Region in\u00a0Ume\u00e5, a participant in the Kvarken Council project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bearing\u00a0this in mind, routes\u00a0like\u00a0Kokkola-Skellefte\u00e5 and\u00a0\u00d6rnsk\u00f6ldsvik-Sein\u00e4joki\u00a0fit\u00a0electric aviation\u00a0like a glove, especially seeing as they are short enough for the first-generation passenger planes with a range of 400 km.\u00a0Also\u00a0other distances within the Kvarken region might come in question, both within and between the countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A push from the battery cluster<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Considering that a battery cluster is forming on both sides of Kvarken,\u00a0it would of course be very appropriate if the region could be a forerunner in\u00a0using batteries,\u00a0and\u00a0not only producing them. At the same time, the battery cluster might\u00a0also\u00a0increase the demand for transport when the regions on both sides of Kvarken work even closer together than what they do today.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The main question is naturally if there is enough demand for different routes within the Kvarken region for electric aviation to be realistic. This we do not know yet today, says\u00a0<\/span>Mr\u00a0Lars Westin<\/span><\/b>, professor at\u00a0Ume\u00e5\u00a0University, also\u00a0a\u00a0participant\u00a0in the project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Earlier\u00a0air traffic\u00a0attempts\u00a0over Kvarken have\u00a0often lacked\u00a0a\u00a0patient actor\u00a0to\u00a0market the flights and integrate the route with public transport on both sides of Kvarken. This\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0required of electric aviation, he points out.<\/span>

The region is ready<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hence, having electric planes on the market in 2026 does not automatically mean that new routes come into existence. For this to happen there needs to be a demand for them, and probably also help from the public sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms\u00a0Helka\u00a0Kalliom\u00e4ki<\/span><\/b>, researcher in region studies at the University of Vaasa has participated in the Kvarken Council project and sees that there clearly is a will among the different actors in the region to push for electric aviation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 This region has unusually strong cross-border collaboration, and many actors are inspired to push for electric aviation.\u00a0What also makes\u00a0electric aviation a realistic possibility is the fact that the aviation industry is pressured to renew itself, both in terms of the environment and considering how it has suffered during the pandemic, says\u00a0Kalliom\u00e4ki.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Feet firmly in the air<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Kvarken region is in good shape for electric aviation as the region has previous experience from building new types of cross-border business models that gather both private and public efforts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Many\u00a0people\u00a0probably\u00a0find\u00a0electric aviation unrealistic, but I am proud to say that our feet are firmly in the air.\u00a0Not everyone believed in the new ferry\u00a0either, but we pulled that off too, says Mathias Lindstr\u00f6m.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

FAIR<\/h3>\n

(Finding innovations to Accelerate the Implementation of electric Regional aviation)\u00a0is to be seen as a first step of preparing the Kvarken region for an early implementation of electric aviation.\u00a0The project increases the knowledge base about electric aviation, investigates the possibilities and surveys both the needs and the required technical investments.<\/p>\n

The project\u2019s partnership consists largely of actors in the Kvarken region, i.e. the counties of Ostrobothnia, South Ostrobothnia, and Central Ostrobothnia in Finland and the county of V\u00e4sterbotten and municipality of \u00d6rnsk\u00f6ldsvik in Sweden. The geography of FAIR includes also Nordland County in Norway.<\/strong><\/p>\n
