{"id":13029,"date":"2022-03-31T10:22:05","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T07:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/?p=13029"},"modified":"2022-09-29T14:12:23","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T11:12:23","slug":"the-fair-team-held-a-seminar-on-electric-aviation-during-energyweek-in-vaasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/en\/the-fair-team-held-a-seminar-on-electric-aviation-during-energyweek-in-vaasa\/","title":{"rendered":"The FAIR team held a seminar on electric aviation during EnergyWeek in Vaasa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jeroen Peeter<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\"><strong>s<\/strong>, Senior Design Researcher at RISE, started the seminar with describing what the FAIR project is and providing examples of how the future of aviation could look like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013 Electric aviation is in fact not that far off in the future, small electric airplanes for 9\u201319 passengers are full on in development right now and will be on the market soon, Peeters says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">First, Peeters showed how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fair-volta.ri.se\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Volta booking app<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> for regional electric voyages could look like. Then he provided an example of a soundscape that consists of how a trip from Lycksele to Vaasa on an electric flight could sound like in the future.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lars Westin<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Professor in Regional Economics at Ume\u00e5 University, was next in line with a presentation of the rise and fall of regional aviation. He talked about aviation from a historical perspective. He explained that regional aviation has been ongoing in the Kvarken region since the 1960s. Due to increased centralization from the 1990s onwards, air traffic has been concentrated to larger hubs, and smaller aircrafts for regional aviation has almost disappeared.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13017\" style=\"width: 2058px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13017\" class=\"wp-image-13017 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0859.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0859.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0859-1280x806.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0859-980x617.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0859-480x302.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 2048px, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lars Westin talked about aviation from a historical perspective, revealing that regional aviation has been ongoing in the Kvarken region since the 1960s.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Isak Br\u00e4ndstr\u00f6m<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Strategy consultant, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Andreas Forsgren<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Head of department at Tyr\u00e9ns, presented why electric aviation is suitable for the Kvarken region. Forsgren explained that good connections are needed when considering the growing battery collaborations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013 This cross-border region has at least two natural barriers \u2013 the sea between Sweden and Finland, and the mountain ranges between Sweden and Norway. The infrastructure system is focused on north-south transportation and the east-west links in this region are much less developed which gives us weak east-west communications and the travel times follow thereafter, Forsgren explains.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13020\" style=\"width: 2058px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13020\" class=\"wp-image-13020 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0872.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0872.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0872-1280x824.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0872-980x631.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_0872-480x309.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 2048px, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Isak Br\u00e4ndstr\u00f6m presented why electric aviation is suitable for the Kvarken region.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The low environmental impact is one of the main arguments for electric aviation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013 Electric aircrafts have zero operational emissions, however there are emissions related to producing the energy and the aircraft itself, as well as maintenance of the aircraft. With the Nordic energy mix, we have a low climate impact from the whole life cycle of an electric aircraft. It is close to the climate impact of a train, Br\u00e4ndstr\u00f6m explains.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013 The more efficient motors and the lower need for maintenance for electric aircrafts means that the costs for operating electric aircrafts will be lower compared to conventional aircrafts of the same size. According to him it could become a local industry in the future, consisting of components and travelling opportunities.
