A total of ten organizations have been granted membership in the Kvarken Council EGTC in\u202f2022, among them a whole region in Sweden, several municipalities and development companies, and some higher education institutions.<\/span> The Kvarken Council has three different membership categories: main, municipal, and organization members.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In connection with the Annual General Meeting of\u202f2022, <\/span>Region V\u00e4sternorrland<\/span><\/b> was granted main membership with voting rights and two Board seats.<\/span> This increased the EGTC\u2019s geographical area and formed a natural continuation to the activities due to the shared World Heritage Site and numerous collaborative projects over the years.<\/span> In addition, Region V\u00e4sternorrland has cooperated in the Nordic context as a long-standing, previous member of the Mid Nordic Committee.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Points of Contact to the Business Sector via Development Companies<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Development company <\/span>Into Sein\u00e4joki<\/span><\/b> is one of the Kvarken Council\u2019s newest members.<\/span> The company views the membership as a natural continuum of previous cooperation with the Kvarken Council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 We\u2019ve already had the chance to benefit from cooperation in the Kvarken Council\u2019s projects.<\/span> There are opportunities for continued development through collaboration in a wider context that utilizes our strengths.<\/span> Moreover, membership in the Kvarken Council enables smoother administration of international projects, says <\/span>Ms Leena Per\u00e4m\u00e4ki<\/span><\/b>, CEO of Into Sein\u00e4joki.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Into Sein\u00e4joki is a municipal development company that is 100% municipally owned and operated in accordance with its statutes in a non-profit purpose.<\/span> Consequently, the company meets the necessary criteria and can be approved as member of the Kvarken Council EGTC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/span>Jakobstad Region Development Company Concordia<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Kristinestad Business Center <\/span><\/b>have also been granted membership in\u202f2022. Development companies strengthen our activities, bring about continuity in terms of project collaboration, and provide a fixed point of contact to the business sector and regional development actors, says Director of the Kvarken Council <\/span>Mr<\/span><\/b> Mathias Lindstr\u00f6m<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Points of contact to the business sector and signals about the Kvarken region\u2019s development needs are obtained not only through regions and their development companies, but also thanks to our region\u2019s municipalities.<\/span> Skellefte\u00e5<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>V\u00e4nn\u00e4s, Kronoby<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Larsmo<\/span><\/b> are among the most recent municipal members.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Although there are currently several major changes taking place in Skellefte\u00e5, we feel the need to belong to a wider context.<\/span> We need cooperation networks in relation to, for instance, logistics and knowledge provision in the northern parts of the Nordic countries, along with mutual efforts to function as a larger unit and jointly increase our attractiveness, says <\/span>Ms Evelina Fahlesson<\/span><\/b>, Municipal Commissioner of Skellefte\u00e5 Municipality and Board member of the Kvarken Council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Higher Education Institutions Want to Contribute to the Region\u2019s Development<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

University of Vaasa<\/span><\/b> applied for membership in the Kvarken Council EGTC in order to strengthen cooperation with the Kvarken region\u2019s actors.<\/span> In addition, <\/span>VAMK University of Applied Sciences<\/span><\/b> was early in the game and considers closer cooperation with the Kvarken Council important with regard to competitiveness and sustainable growth in the whole region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 As a university community, we want to contribute to the region\u2019s development via membership in the European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation.<\/span> The membership brings about many opportunities that are strongly linked with the university\u2019s statutory tasks \u2013 research, education, and societal interaction, states Rector of the University of Vaasa <\/span>Ms Minna Martikainen<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is great interest in Nordic, cross-border cooperation in the Kvarken region.<\/span> Several potential members have come forward in addition to memberships granted in\u202f2022 and the EGTC\u2019s previous members.<\/span> Active members get to enjoy the benefits and synergy effects generated by strong Nordic cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Our members consist of dynamic organizations and we have an exciting year ahead of us.<\/span> For instance, the number of higher education institution members will increase in\u202f2023, and these institutions will receive an even stronger, shared point of contact through membership in the Kvarken Council, Mr Lindstr\u00f6m reveals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 We bid all new members welcome and note that this also increases the pressure on services provided by the Kvarken Council.<\/span> We will continue to fortify our office functions in\u202f2023, primarily in Sweden, Mr Lindstr\u00f6m continues.<\/span><\/p>\n
