The Kvarken Council EGTC functions as the sole beneficiary in its EGTC role in two of the funded feasibility studies.<\/span> This is an option av<\/span>ailable for the EGTC organizational form, and it allows the Kvarken Council\u2019s members to work together across borders in the project even though the funding and administration are handled entirely by the Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cooperation Structure for Cultural Actors in the Kvarken Region<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

The first feasibility study to receive funding is called <\/span>Cultural Platform Kvarken<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span> Its overarching goal is to investigate whether it is possible to establish a cooperation structure that facilitates continuous cultural cooperation in the Kvarken region and brings together stakeholders, consumers, companies, and policymakers across borders, for example in the form of an event platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the need to develop a common structure for cross-border cultural cooperation in the Kvarken region is confirmed, the intention is to draft an application for a larger implementation project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Human encounters are essential in cross-border cooperation.<\/span> We hope that the project will lead to a physical meeting place that strengthens our social and cultural ties in the Kvarken region, says <\/span>Mr Fredrik Furu<\/span><\/b>, Project Manager for <\/span>Cultural Platform Kvarken.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Cross-Border University Cooperation<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

The second feasibility study to receive funding is called <\/span>Kvarken Unicollab<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span> The need for employees with various niche competencies is expected to increase in the Kvarken region in the future, and this poses significant challenges in terms of retraining existing residents and attracting new ones.<\/span> Cross-border university cooperation could offer a broader spectrum of academic opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the course of the feasibility study, the Kvarken Council \u2013 together with Ume\u00e5 University, Mid Sweden University, the University of Vaasa, Hanken School of Economics, and Vaasa University of Applied Sciences \u2013 will map out common goals, conditions, and challenges related to cross-border collaborations.<\/span> In this way, specific areas in need of increased university cooperation in the Kvarken region can be identified.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 T<\/span>here are currently around 90,000\u202funiversity, college, and university of applied sciences students in the Kvarken region<\/span>.<\/span> By bringing together the Kvarken region\u2019s educational institutions in a cross-border project, there are good opportunities to further strengthen and intensify cooperation, says <\/span>Ms Veronica Berg, <\/span><\/b>the Kvarken Council\u2019s Development Manager.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cross-Border Network for the Film Industry<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

The third feasibility study to receive funding is called <\/span>Kvarken Film Network<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span> The goal of the feasibility study is to analyze the potential for a cross-border network of key stakeholders within the film and television industry in the Kvarken region.<\/span> Such a network could serve as a foundation for developing the Kvarken region\u2019s film industry.<\/span> This feasibility study\u2019s intention is also to draft an application for a larger implementation project.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kvarken Council and its partners are satisfied with the decision and thank for the granted funding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mats Brandt, Regional Mayor at the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia and representative of the Kvarken Council, participated in Europaforum Norra Sverige in Sundsvall, Sweden, and took the opportunity to emphasize both Finland\u2019s long tradition of security of supply and the forward-looking Nordic Connector project.<\/p>

The forum\u2019s theme, \u201cNorthern EU in a New Geopolitical Perspective\u201d, provided Brandt with a perfect stage to discuss how regions can play a larger role in Europe\u2019s geopolitical development. Brandt reminded that Finland\u2019s security of supply has deep historical roots dating back to the First World War.<\/p>

\u2013 Iron, gunpowder, and grain \u2013 that\u2019s where it starts. We are very proud of our capacity to maintain continuity during crises, which has been proven several times throughout history, not least during the oil crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, he explained.<\/p>

However, the central part of Brandt\u2019s presentation was dedicated to the Nordic Connector project, which he describes as a lifeline for the security and development of the region and the entire Northern Nordics.<\/p>

Brandt emphasized that the project offers a new dimension of cooperation and integration across regional borders. It can act as a catalyst for further collaboration and development and has the potential to radically reshape future landscapes in both the Northern Nordics and Europe.<\/p>

\u2013 Through Nordic Connector, we are not only creating new trade routes and communication lines but also stronger ties between communities across regional borders, which enhances our collective resilience up here in the North, he explained.<\/p>

\u2013 This vision of connectivity has occasionally been forgotten but is today more relevant than ever. We are facing not just an opportunity to physically connect two coasts but also to ideologically and economically integrate the northern parts of Europe, Brandt concluded.<\/p>

In his speech at Europaforum, Brandt emphasized the importance of continuing to promote development initiatives like these at regional, national, and European levels to ensure success and to strengthen security and development in northern Europe.<\/p>
