The proposal to set up a working committee for energy within the Kvarken Council EGTC came from energy companies participating in the <\/span>Bothnia Green Energy<\/span><\/i><\/b> project.<\/span> The rationale is to strengthen cooperation across the entire Kvarken region in the energy sector and create a platform for dialogue between politics, academia, and energy companies.<\/span> The working committee is tasked with developing an energy agenda and an annual action plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 T<\/span>he Kvarken Council\u2019s vision is for the Kvarken region to make the most meaningful global impact through Nordic cooperation, and one of the five key issues identified by the member organizations is to promote green transition in our region.<\/span> The working committee for energy has a central role in this task, and it carries out concrete activities and initiatives that contribute to regional development and cross-border cooperation.<\/span> The committee\u2019s efforts also ensure that collaboration continues and stays alive even when there are no current projects bringing the actors together, states <\/span>Ms Veronica Berg,<\/span><\/b> Development Manager at the Kvarken Council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working committees can also include representatives of organizations that are not and cannot become members of the Kvarken Council EGTC.<\/span> The idea is to effectively listen to needs and ideas from the field and ensure that cooperation initiatives have a regional or local order and recipient.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/span>The Kvarken Council promotes cooperation across sector boundaries to develop new solutions to complex problems.<\/span> We work together with academia, industries, and other public institutions to create synergies and innovations that can lead to real societal change.<\/span> Establishing working committees like this is possible thanks to our EGTC organizational form and is a concrete example of how we apply this relatively new organizational form for us, says <\/span>Mr Mathias Lindstr\u00f6m,<\/span><\/b> Director of the Kvarken Council.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The working committee for energy will consist of the following members from the Kvarken Council\u2019s Board:<\/span> Joakim Strand<\/span><\/b> (Chairman), <\/span>Richard Carstedt <\/span><\/b>(Vice Chairman), <\/span>Stina Mattila,<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>Evelina Fahlesson<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> Representatives from energy companies and universities will participate in the working committee on a rotating basis.<\/span> The following members have been appointed from the region\u2019s energy companies:<\/span> Jan Ridfeldt<\/span><\/b>, CEO of Ume\u00e5 Energi, <\/span>Stefan Damlin<\/span><\/b>, CEO of Vaasan S\u00e4hk\u00f6, <\/span>Joachim Nordin<\/span><\/b>, CEO of Skellefte\u00e5 Kraft, and <\/span>Kirsi Hautala<\/span><\/b>, CEO of Kokkolan Energia.<\/span> The following persons have been appointed from the region\u2019s universities:<\/span> Margareta Bj\u00f6rklund-S\u00e4nkiaho<\/span><\/b>, Professor of Energy Technology from \u00c5bo Akademi, <\/span>Dieter M\u00fcller<\/span><\/b>, Vice Rector of Ume\u00e5 University, <\/span>Hans Erik Nilsson<\/span><\/b>, Vice Rector of Mid Sweden University, and <\/span>Margareta Groth<\/span><\/b>, Head of Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics at Lule\u00e5 University of Technology.<\/span> The last three will participate collaboratively and determine who will attend each meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mats Brandt, Regional Mayor at the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia and representative of the Kvarken Council, participated in Europaforum Norra Sverige in Sundsvall, Sweden, and took the opportunity to emphasize both Finland\u2019s long tradition of security of supply and the forward-looking Nordic Connector project.<\/p>

The forum\u2019s theme, \u201cNorthern EU in a New Geopolitical Perspective\u201d, provided Brandt with a perfect stage to discuss how regions can play a larger role in Europe\u2019s geopolitical development. Brandt reminded that Finland\u2019s security of supply has deep historical roots dating back to the First World War.<\/p>

\u2013 Iron, gunpowder, and grain \u2013 that\u2019s where it starts. We are very proud of our capacity to maintain continuity during crises, which has been proven several times throughout history, not least during the oil crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, he explained.<\/p>

However, the central part of Brandt\u2019s presentation was dedicated to the Nordic Connector project, which he describes as a lifeline for the security and development of the region and the entire Northern Nordics.<\/p>

Brandt emphasized that the project offers a new dimension of cooperation and integration across regional borders. It can act as a catalyst for further collaboration and development and has the potential to radically reshape future landscapes in both the Northern Nordics and Europe.<\/p>

\u2013 Through Nordic Connector, we are not only creating new trade routes and communication lines but also stronger ties between communities across regional borders, which enhances our collective resilience up here in the North, he explained.<\/p>

\u2013 This vision of connectivity has occasionally been forgotten but is today more relevant than ever. We are facing not just an opportunity to physically connect two coasts but also to ideologically and economically integrate the northern parts of Europe, Brandt concluded.<\/p>

In his speech at Europaforum, Brandt emphasized the importance of continuing to promote development initiatives like these at regional, national, and European levels to ensure success and to strengthen security and development in northern Europe.<\/p>
