At the energy seminar in Kokkola, organized by the Bothnia Green Energy project on May 23rd in connection to the Kvarken Council’s annual meeting, the opportunities and challenges of the increased demand for clean energy were discussed. Participants from Fingrid<\/strong>, Flexens<\/strong>, Corporal Frisk<\/strong>, Kokkolan Energia<\/strong>, Skellefte\u00e5 Kraft<\/strong>, and Vaasan S\u00e4hk\u00f6<\/strong> emphasized the importance of national and international cooperation, innovation, and robust infrastructure to meet future energy needs.<\/p>\n

Collaboration for Secure Energy Systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A recurring theme in the discussions was the importance of collaboration at regional, national, and international levels. Replacing fossil fuels with fossil-free alternatives is costly but necessary for a sustainable future. Currently, the production of fossil-free fuels is more expensive, but with the right infrastructure and cooperation, these costs can be managed. The Kvarken region’s access to clean energy creates significant opportunities in the green transition. Cross-border collaboration is crucial to ensure energy supply.<\/p>\n

Robin H\u00e4ggblom<\/strong> from Corporal Frisk highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation around the Baltic Sea, where trade and transport have historically been central. In today’s context, this becomes even more important considering the security challenges and geopolitical tensions facing the region. Effective collaboration between authorities, companies, and international actors is necessary to ensure robust and flexible energy systems. It is important to develop communication channels between authorities and companies now to be able to act quickly and collectively in crisis situations.<\/p>\n

Challenges and Opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From high production costs for fossil-free fuels to the need for extensive infrastructure investments, the challenges are many. A central issue is also how to ensure stability and reliability in energy systems during the transition.<\/p>\n

“The biggest challenge is securing energy in time for the green transition. To achieve this, cooperation between energy companies and other organizations is required to meet the timeline,” says Ann-Christine Schmidt<\/strong>, Head of Research, Development, and Innovation at Skellefte\u00e5 Kraft.<\/p>\n

Stefan Damlin<\/strong>, CEO of Vaasan S\u00e4hk\u00f6, Kirsi Hautala<\/strong>, CEO of Kokkolan Energia, and Ann-Christine Schmidt<\/strong> participated in a panel where they pointed out the importance of adapting energy use to the availability of energy, educating future generations on smart energy use, and expanding energy infrastructure to enable the green transition.<\/p>\n

“There will be no transition without transmission,” says Stefan Damlin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Peter Hedman<\/strong>, project manager for Bothnia Green Energy, concluded by stating that there is an information gap between Sweden and Finland that must be bridged.<\/p>\n

“More people need to know more about everything happening in the energy sector and the green transition in the Kvarken region. This includes information about all the investments currently being made on both sides of the Kvarken and that we learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector,” says Peter Hedman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Mats Brandt, Regional Mayor at the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia and representative of the Kvarken Council, participated in Europaforum Norra Sverige in Sundsvall, Sweden, and took the opportunity to emphasize both Finland\u2019s long tradition of security of supply and the forward-looking Nordic Connector project.<\/p>

The forum\u2019s theme, \u201cNorthern EU in a New Geopolitical Perspective\u201d, provided Brandt with a perfect stage to discuss how regions can play a larger role in Europe\u2019s geopolitical development. Brandt reminded that Finland\u2019s security of supply has deep historical roots dating back to the First World War.<\/p>

\u2013 Iron, gunpowder, and grain \u2013 that\u2019s where it starts. We are very proud of our capacity to maintain continuity during crises, which has been proven several times throughout history, not least during the oil crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, he explained.<\/p>

However, the central part of Brandt\u2019s presentation was dedicated to the Nordic Connector project, which he describes as a lifeline for the security and development of the region and the entire Northern Nordics.<\/p>

Brandt emphasized that the project offers a new dimension of cooperation and integration across regional borders. It can act as a catalyst for further collaboration and development and has the potential to radically reshape future landscapes in both the Northern Nordics and Europe.<\/p>

\u2013 Through Nordic Connector, we are not only creating new trade routes and communication lines but also stronger ties between communities across regional borders, which enhances our collective resilience up here in the North, he explained.<\/p>

\u2013 This vision of connectivity has occasionally been forgotten but is today more relevant than ever. We are facing not just an opportunity to physically connect two coasts but also to ideologically and economically integrate the northern parts of Europe, Brandt concluded.<\/p>

In his speech at Europaforum, Brandt emphasized the importance of continuing to promote development initiatives like these at regional, national, and European levels to ensure success and to strengthen security and development in northern Europe.<\/p>
