One of the speakers during the seminar was a new member of the Finnish Parliament, <\/span>Martin Paasi<\/span><\/b>. His topic was \u201c<\/span>Finland Needs an Inspiring Vision for Its Future: A Nordic Approach<\/span><\/i>\u201d. He presented his views on Finland\u2019s economic future, involving declining labour productivity and growing government debt. He also stressed the need for foreign investments and workers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 By putting a heavy focus on the Nordic region, we will become stronger in Europe and in the global economy, Paasi said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paasi also highlighted Finland\u2019s unique position as the only EU country with critical minerals like lithium and cobalt, essential for industries such as battery manufacturing. According to him, Finland should take charge of its mineral excavation to avoid being overrun by EU directives.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Fixed Link Over Kvarken Needs Both Public and Private Financing<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

Kim Wikstr\u00f6m<\/span><\/b>, Professor in Industrial Management at \u00c5bo Akademi, presented how to finance a fixed link over Kvarken. Wikstr\u00f6m proposed a hybrid model involving both public and private financing as the most feasible solution for this cross-border infrastructure project.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 If you\u2019re doing a cross-border project, you need to align the countries\u2019 interests, Wikstr\u00f6m pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wikstr\u00f6m stressed that the fixed link over Kvarken is a project that reaches far into the future and that\u2019s why it should be seen as more than just a regular infrastructure project. If we start calculating based on the traffic that we have today between Ume\u00e5 and Vaasa, this project won\u2019t succeed. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to show that the fixed link has wider, long-term benefits for the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Relations in the World<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

Both Paasi and Wikstr\u00f6m, as well as the rest of the speakers \u2013 <\/span>Wegger Christian Str\u00f8mmen<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Niklas Eklund<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>Risto E. J. Penttil\u00e4<\/span><\/b> \u2013 also participated in a panel discussion at the end of the seminar. The discussion covered topics such as the geopolitical situation, Finland and Sweden\u2019s NATO membership, cooperation in the Nordics, and the fixed link over Kvarken.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 We should avoid doing nothing. Big projects work as symbols and bring initiative, which shows that we actually can change things, Paasi said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The panellists also discussed cooperation between universities in the Nordics. Everyone agreed that there should be more exchange between the Nordic universities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The best thing for young people is to leave their country. If you go to Europe, you realise that you\u2019re Nordic. If you go outside of Europe, you realise that you\u2019re European, Penttil\u00e4 pointed out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Is there a place in the world where relations between countries are better than in the Nordics? I\u2019m not sure. We must capitalise on that, Str\u00f8mmen said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kvarken Council EGTC and the Finnish-Swedish Chamber of Commerce organised a seminar titled \u201cGrowth and Security in the Nordic Region\u201d on Thursday, August 8th during Wasa Future Festival. Mats Brandt, Regional Mayor at the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia and representative of the Kvarken Council, participated in Europaforum Norra Sverige in Sundsvall, Sweden, and took the opportunity to emphasize both Finland\u2019s long tradition of security of supply and the forward-looking Nordic Connector project.<\/p>

The forum\u2019s theme, \u201cNorthern EU in a New Geopolitical Perspective\u201d, provided Brandt with a perfect stage to discuss how regions can play a larger role in Europe\u2019s geopolitical development. Brandt reminded that Finland\u2019s security of supply has deep historical roots dating back to the First World War.<\/p>

\u2013 Iron, gunpowder, and grain \u2013 that\u2019s where it starts. We are very proud of our capacity to maintain continuity during crises, which has been proven several times throughout history, not least during the oil crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, he explained.<\/p>

However, the central part of Brandt\u2019s presentation was dedicated to the Nordic Connector project, which he describes as a lifeline for the security and development of the region and the entire Northern Nordics.<\/p>

Brandt emphasized that the project offers a new dimension of cooperation and integration across regional borders. It can act as a catalyst for further collaboration and development and has the potential to radically reshape future landscapes in both the Northern Nordics and Europe.<\/p>

\u2013 Through Nordic Connector, we are not only creating new trade routes and communication lines but also stronger ties between communities across regional borders, which enhances our collective resilience up here in the North, he explained.<\/p>

\u2013 This vision of connectivity has occasionally been forgotten but is today more relevant than ever. We are facing not just an opportunity to physically connect two coasts but also to ideologically and economically integrate the northern parts of Europe, Brandt concluded.<\/p>

In his speech at Europaforum, Brandt emphasized the importance of continuing to promote development initiatives like these at regional, national, and European levels to ensure success and to strengthen security and development in northern Europe.<\/p>
