Communications, infrastructure, and the transport system form the foundation of everything in a region with vast geography and long distances. This is the project\u2019s premise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6695 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Karta_Ost-vastliga-straket_RGB-842x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"842\" height=\"1024\" \/>\u00a0TEN-T-liikenneverkon runkoverkkok\u00e4yt\u00e4v\u00e4t p\u00e4\u00e4ttyiv\u00e4t aiemmin Pohjoismaiden p\u00e4\u00e4kaupunkeihin, eiv\u00e4t pidemm\u00e4lle pohjoiseen. Kun k\u00e4yt\u00e4v\u00e4t nyt kohtaavat pohjoisessa, pit\u00e4isi my\u00f6s it\u00e4-l\u00e4nsisuuntainen v\u00e4yl\u00e4 saada liitetty\u00e4 niihin.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mr Tomas Sikstr\u00f6m<\/em><\/strong> has led the city of Ume\u00e5\u2019s planning and development work in Sweden for several decades. For the past ten years, he has worked as an advisor to <strong>INAB \u2013 <em>Infrastruktur i Ume\u00e5 AB<\/em><\/strong>, a municipal company that strives to create efficient and sustainable logistics and transport solutions in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inadequate Transport Systems Impact All Sectors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr Sikstr\u00f6m is currently a consultant in the project <strong><em>\u00d6st-v\u00e4stliga str\u00e5ket<\/em><\/strong>, which aims to develop the east-west route and was launched in\u00a02019 by the <strong>Kvarken Council<\/strong>. INAB participates as a project partner. The project is now in its final stage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Two other parallel Interreg projects were carried out in 2016\u20132019 with the purpose of acquiring more knowledge and statistics about the regions\u2019 infrastructure and transport system. This project continues their work and aims to further develop the existing materials and elevate them to both national and European levels, Mr Sikstr\u00f6m explains.<\/p>\n<p>In order to foster continued development in the regions and in relation to the rest of Europe, transport and communications solutions must also be developed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; They provide a basis for all development \u2013 an absolute prerequisite, Mr Sikstr\u00f6m states. Inadequate communications affect everything in society; the economic life, education, health care, tourism, and export suffer from dysfunctional transports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every Reason to Position<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The long-term goal is continued development \u2013 in a region that already lies at the forefront within several sectors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We\u2019ve identified such sectors within the project and found unique competence. We have expertise and resources, but in order to continue their development, the regions\u2019 transport and communications system must also be developed in all respects \u2013 roads, railroads and maritime transports, Mr Sikstr\u00f6m tells.<\/p>\n<p>We want to establish this in the project and show that we can accomplish things in the region that strengthen not only our own competitiveness but that of the entire Europe. Demonstrating this is important in the competition for EU funding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Positioning is the key, Mr Sikstr\u00f6m continues. If our region receives development funding, it\u2019s not a question of emergency relief but something that benefits even the rest of Europe and has significance at various levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Politically Anchored Document Leads the Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s chosen approach to achieve its goals is to first create a so-called <strong><em>positioning document<\/em><\/strong>. It is a concrete document where the region positions itself regarding its competence and competitiveness \u2013 and explains the benefits of this to the rest of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Politicians stand behind our project\u2019s strategy, and the next step is for our regional politicians to collaborate with the project and take it to the national level. The coronavirus pandemic prevented many important meetings, and we\u2019re still some distance from the finish line, but we\u2019ll continue to push this issue until the positioning document is signed, Mr\u00a0Sikstr\u00f6m promises.<\/p>\n<p>After this, long-standing work will begin to produce a detailed plan involving all actors. &#8211; We\u2019ll create a politically coordinated prioritization list \u2013 a list of measures with implications far beyond our borders, Mr Sikstr\u00f6m concludes.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Text: Anna Sand<br \/>\nPhoto: Pressbild<\/em><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2826 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kvarken.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Intrerreg-BA-ENG-RGB_650x160-300x74.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"74\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The <strong>\u00d6st-v\u00e4stliga str\u00e5ket (East-West Route) <\/strong>project\u2019s specific goal is to produce more strategies concerning sustainable east-west transports through the Botnia-Atlantica region in a national and European transport system.
