Director’s greeting

Autumn is once again here, and Kvarken Council’s first newsletter has just arrived!

Many of you have wondered how the Midway Alignment project will proceed now that the European Commission declined our funding application. The Midway Alignment project aims to tie the Kvarken region together and increase the region’s competitiveness by developing the logistic and transport solutions concerning the route’s passenger and freight traffic. The new, innovative and environmentally friendly Kvarken ferry plays a major role in this.

As I’m sure everyone understands, we were disappointed to have our EU funding application denied due to a technical defect in the application. However, we are convinced that we can find a solution. The work with the Midway Alignment project will continue, and we have already started the process of reviewing various financing alternatives and preparing our new application.

A new call within the Motorways of the Sea programme will begin now in September. Between these two application rounds, we have managed to draft several reports that demonstrate the benefits arising from the implementation of the Midway Alignment project. These reports are very important, and we have been able to draft them on account of the MABA support project, which received funding from Interreg/Botnia-Atlantica. More about these reports will be revealed in the coming newsletters. It is important to highlight the fact that we have come this far thanks to cooperation. The strong support that we have received from many directions has been irreplaceable – regardless of whether the support has been political, financial or in the form of work or encouragement. The region stands united. The journey has only just begun, and we look forward to reaching our destination!

During the winter, we will invite the project’s old and new cooperation partners to an event where we will discuss in detail all our past activities and inform the partners of our future measures.

Our newsletters will arrive via email about once a month. In these newsletters, we will inform you of our activities, our cross-border cooperation and other things that contribute to the vitality of the Kvarken region. We hope to meet you or hear from you in various contexts. Enjoy the beautiful autumn wonders!

Forwards – together.
