The Kvarken Council is a cross-border cooperation association for the three Regional Councils of Ostrobothnia and the the cities of Vaasa, Kokkola, Seinäjoki and Jakobstad and in Finland, as well as the Regional Council of Västerbotten and the city of Örnsköldsvik in Sweden. The Kvarken Council is one of twelve official cross-border operators co-funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
The Kvarken Council was founded in 1972, and has since been working on promoting cross border cooperation and integration.
The financing of the Kvarken Council
The Kvarken Council is financed partly by the Nordic Council of Ministers and partly by membership fees.
The membership fees are calculated on the basis of the number of inhabitants.
The membership fees are used to fund the basic functions and administration of the Kvarken Council.
The financing from the Nordic Council of Ministers is used to fund the managing of cross-border cooperation projects.
