FAIR Panel on the RISE Volta app and Implications for the Future Regional Electric Air System
Tuesday November 30th, we invited to a Panel on the FAIR Volta app and Implications for the Future Regional Electric Air System. The panel was hosted by RISE in work package 3 as part of the FAIR project. The aim was to debate implications and explore possible uses, values, and societal scenarios from some of the different perspectives that are linked to the prototype: The role of norm-criticism when innovating in complex systems, how business and tourism travel can adapt to possible new realities and how we plan for development of critical infrastructure when unknown systemic changes are imminent.
The FAIR Volta is a booking website that speculates on the user experience of on-demand electric aviation in the region. Three features set this system apart from air travel as we know it: negotiated departure times between customers, pricing that reflects flexibility and concurrence between customers and travel that is booked from address to address. The discussion pointed out opportunities, such as connecting the Volta app to cargo deliveries and adding to the app for regional business and tourism development and also found challenges in for example how to align for cross-border transportation between different countries. The panel talked about how to scale for aviation that we do not see today, ranging from our initial systematic assumptions, mobility services and infrastructure to demand and business modelling. The concluding thought raised was: Which perspectives are utilized when building the travel system and is it possible to add different target groups to achieve new solutions?
Panellists were Melinda From, Expert Norm-Critical Innovation, RISE, Elisabet Kivimäki, Key Account Manager Investment services and Internationalization, Into Seinäjoki Ltd and Hampus Alfredsson, Researcher Electromobility, RISE.
