The Kvarken Council EGTC and its partners receive funding for four new projects

The Kvarken Council EGTC is the lead partner or project partner in four new projects which have been granted funding in the EU’s Interreg Aurora programme. The projects include tourism, sustainable aviation, the resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises, and low-emission shipping. In total, these projects have been granted approximately EUR 3.64 million in EU funding for initiatives that strengthen both the business sector and the vitality of the Kvarken region.

During the Wasa Future Festival, speakers showed how a stronger joint narrative, deeper integration and better infrastructure can unlock the region's potential. The potential is there, but it will not realize itself. For the assets of the Kvarken region to reach their full potential, the region needs to make its strengths visible, deepen integration and build the connections that are still missing. During the seminar, speakers presented different perspectives on how this can be achieved.

Work for the Bothnian Coastal Route sustainability working method has now started

Jeppe Klockareson from Fair Travel and Anu Nylund from Mood of Finland has been chosen as the two consultants to identify the Bothnian Coastal Route sustainability working method. It was decided that out of different programs and methods, the BCR team want to find a method that is suitable for the BCR area and can be implemented with the BCR area companies. Now the first meetings have been held, and the work has started. The team, along with local project managers, will be trained in March, and the work with the Bothnian Coastal Route companies will start after the training.

The new Finnish Government, which consists of the National Coalition Party, the Finns Party, the Swedish People’s Party of Finland, and the Christian Democrats, presented a comprehensive Government Programme on Friday. The programme for 2023–2027, titled “A Strong and Committed Finland”, is 259 pages long and delivers many positive entries that clearly concern the Kvarken region and Nordic cooperation.

First start-up meeting with destination marketing organisations

The Bothnian Coastal Route project, including northern Finnish and Swedish destinations, aims to increase awareness of the coastal route around the Bothnian Bay and over the Kvarken strait as an attractive travel route for both foreign visitors and the local population. In March 2023 the project team arranged a startup meeting in Haparanda with destination marketing organisations from all around the project area. The aim was to gather the whole project area, to define the content of the project all together, to create a sense of togetherness, establish networks and a common strategy for the working process forward.

Allowance to strengthen cooperation and conditions for young wrestlers

The Kvarken Council grants allowance for activities that strengthen contacts between Sweden and Finland in the Kvarken region. At the end of 2021, Umeå Wrestling Club, called Umeå Brottning, was granted support for training and competition opportunities together with Finnish wrestlers and clubs. The collaborative project included activities on both sides of the Kvarken, ending in Umeå and the international tournament Umeå Wrestling Battle. The tournament took place on the 14th–16th of October 2022.

The Bothnian Coastal Route project aims to increase awareness of the coastal route over the Kvarken strait and around the Bothnian Bay as an attractive travel route for both foreign visitors and the local population. Through the project, the partners aim to increase the reasons for visiting the destinations along the route to discover their rich product range and create better conditions for sustainable growth. The partnership received the news of granted funding for the new tourism project with great joy.

First Interreg Aurora projects approved – Kvarken Council with its partners received funding for three new projects

The new Interreg Aurora Programme has approved the first projects in the funding period 2021–2027. The two Steering Committees, for sub-area Sápmi and sub-area Aurora have met on 22nd–23rd of November in Luleå to decide on new cross-border cooperation projects in the northernmost part of Europe and Sápmi. The Steering Committees approved 27 projects in the first call, more than 21 million euro was allocated.

The cross-border E12 Atlantica Transport project between project partners in Finland, Sweden and Norway aims to strengthen the cooperation between the partners, reduce border barriers, and develop the transport route ranging from the Norwegian Helgeland across the Swedish Västerbotten and all the way to the Finnish Ostrobothnia.
